German Apple Cake Recipe
Pan: 10-inch (25 cm) round cake pan
Oven temperature: 350°F (175°C)
Baking time: Approximately 35–40 minutes
๐ง Ingredients
For the most consistent results, I recommend weighing ingredients in grams whenever possible. US cup and spoon measurements are provided for convenience.
๐ง Cake Batter
• 125 g (1/2 cup + 1 tbsp) softened butter
• 90 g (8tbsp) sugar
• 1 pinch salt
• 1 tsp vanilla extract
• 2 eggs
• 180 g (1 1/2 cups) all-purpose flour
• 8 g (2 tsp) baking powder
• 50 g (3 tbsp + 1 tsp) milk
๐ Apple Topping
• About 3-4 medium apples, depending on size
• A little lemon juice
• 1 tbsp sugar
• A few very thin slices of butter
Step-by-Step Instructions
1. Prepare the cake batter
Beat the softened butter and sugar together until creamy. Add the eggs, one at a time, mixing well after each addition. Mix in the vanilla extract.
Combine the flour, baking powder, and salt. Gradually add these dry ingredients to the butter mixture, along with the milk, and mix until you have a smooth batter.
2. Prepare the cake pan
Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
Grease a 10-inch round cake pan and line the bottom with parchment paper. Spread the cake batter evenly into the prepared pan.
3. Prepare the apples
Peel and core the apples, then cut them into thin, even slices, approximately 3–6 mm thick.
Add a little lemon juice to help prevent the apple slices from browning.
4. Arrange the apples
Place the apple slices on top of the batter in overlapping circles, starting around the outside edge and working toward the center.
Take your time with this step. The arrangement gives the finished cake its beautiful appearance.
5. Add the topping
Sprinkle approximately 1 tablespoon of sugar over the apples. Distribute a few small pieces of butter over the top.
6. Bake the cake
Bake at 350°F (175°C) for approximately 35–40 minutes, until the cake is golden brown and a toothpick inserted into the cake portion comes out clean.
Allow the cake to cool before removing it from the pan.
